139th Kentucky Derby Post Positions – Top Three Favorites for the 2013 Kentucky Derby

A total of 21 participants were entered Wednesday, marking the 10th consecutive year the first leg of the Triple Crown brings at least 20 entrants, with a maximum 20 able to start. Fear the Kitten, the 21st horse, won’t be on the starting line for the 139th Kentucky Derby, however, the three year old colt will be on the “also-eligible” list, which gives him the chance to run if there is an official scratch of another horse by 9 a.m. ET Friday.

139th Kentucky Derby Post Positions For the first time in 139 years of history, the system to get into the Derby was determined by a tiered points system comprising 36 races, with the emphasis on races at longer distances and later in the spring. Previous to this system, it was based on who had the most earnings in graded-stakes races.

Now it’s time to check the favorite candidates for this year’s race and their respective horse racing odds.

The top three horses to beat this year are Orb, Verrazano and Goldencents. All three drew favorable starting spots in the post-position draw held on Wednesday and were picked as this year’s favorites by Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia.

Florida Derby winner Orb will be the favorite for Saturday’s 139th Kentucky Derby. Orb, ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by Claude “Shug” McGaughey III, is the 7-2 favorite on the board and will leave the gate from the 16th post position.

Orb is almost as close in the starting line and odds to its biggest rival, the unbeaten Verrazano. Wood Memorial winner Verrazano – whom about a month ago was the anticipated favorite for Saturday’s race, is posted second at 4-1, and will break from the 14th position. The third favorite is Goldencents, trained by Doug O’Neill and part-owned by University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino. Goldencents is right behind in the odds at 5-1and will start from No. 8.

Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, Orb enters this year’s Derby on a four-race winning streak. He won the Florida Derby in his last start. The 3-year-old drew the No. 16 post in a full field of 20 horses. Four horses have won from there, most recently Animal Kingdom in the 2011 Derby.

Verrazano, son of More Than Ready and trained by Todd Pletcher, comes into the Derby holding a four race streak. Wins achieved this year includes March 9th Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) and April 6th Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). Verrazano did not run until Jan. 1st, 2013. If he wins the Derby then he will become the second horse to win the Road to the Roses without racing as a 2-year-old. The only one so far is Apollo back in 1882.

Goldencents, owned by W. C. Racing, Dave Kenney, and University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino’s R A P Racing, has three stakes wins in his record: the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III), Sham Stakes (gr. III), and Santa Anita Derby (gr. I).
