2012 NCAA Football Betting – Can The Zips Stun The Buckeyes?

With no NBA schedule on the horizon, sports betting players are looking for other avenues of wagering and college football is one of the most obvious as the season prepares to kick off in just under a month. No story has been bigger in college football than the Ohio State program, and they’ll head into their opener against state rival Akron, who are looking for their biggest upset ever, but coming off the worst season in their history.

ohio-state-betting-2012Akron Ohio State Betting – Saturday, September 3rd, 12:00 PM ET. The Zips were 1-11 last year in the Mid-American Conference, defeating Buffalo at home to avoid an 0-12 season, and it was a tough year for coach Rob Ianello in his first year leading Akron. It may not get much better for the Zips in Year No.2 of the Ianello regime, although it can barely get worse. The Zips finished near the bottom of the NCAA in most offensive statistical categories, and while quarterback Patrick Nicely is now a junior, he will be without the running-back duo of Alex Allen and Nate Burley. The defense will have to carry the Zips, but even then, you may have more luck at an online casino than betting on Akron’s fortunes this year.

Where to start with the Buckeyes, who beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl last year? Coach Jim Tressel is gone after his part in the paraphernalia-selling scandal that broke over the offseason, and so is quarterback Terrelle Pryor. A few more players are suspended for the first five games of the season, leaving coach Luke Fickell in a predicament. Only four starters are back on defense, which was always going to be tough to deal with, but now the Buckeyes will be extremely short on offense, which means the defense has to pick it up quickly.

NCAA football betting odds for this game haven’t been released, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the Buckeyes will be massive favorites at home in Columbus, where they haven’t lost since September 2009 against USC, and they’re 6-1 in seven meetings with the Zips, who have been underdogs by an average of 27 points in their last two trips to “The Horseshoe”. Most of the Akron players were passed over by the Buckeyes, so even with all of Ohio State’s losses, they’ll still have the edge in talent, but it’s a wounded program and the Zips would love to stick it to their high-profile state rivals. Take Ohio State to win outright, but be careful of the spread because this is going to be a much closer game than you think and even at full strength, the Buckeyes didn’t cover massive sports betting spreads in 2001 and 2007. If it’s a line of 25 or more towards the Buckeyes, take the Zips against the spread when you bet on sports.
