2013 Belmont Stakes: Contenders Belmont Stakes Betting Odds

The third leg of the popular Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing takes place this Saturday, June 8th at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.  A large field or horses is expected for the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes, with as many as 14 contenders entering the race. However, bettors and horse racing fans will have their eyes fixed on two horses: Kentucky Derby winner Orb and 2013 Preakness Stakes winner Oxbow.

2013 Belmont StakesOrb and Oxbow will look to cap the season with a win at Belmont and two Triple Crown victories, but they won’t have an easy task as the remaining contenders will also look to enter their names in the record books.

Oxbow ran in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, entering the race as a 25–1 long shot. The three year old colt ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens finished the race sixth of the nineteen runners, six lengths behind Orb. Oxbow next went to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore to run in the 2013 Preakness Stakes, where he recorded a 15–1 upset victory by one and three quarter lengths in front of runner-up Itsmyluckyday.

Orb, who started his three-year-old season with an impressive victory at Gulfstream Park on January 26th, entered the 139th Kentucky Derby as the big favorite to win the first leg of the Triple Crown. The colt ridden by Joel Rosario, took the lead one sixteenth of a mile from home and pulled away to win by 2 1/2 lengths from Golden Soul in a final time of 2:02:89.Two weeks later, Orb entered the Preakness as a 3/5 favorite, but finished the race in fourth place behind the upset winner Oxbow.

This is the 21st time the Belmont is headlined by rematch featuring the Derby and Preakness winners. The Derby winner has come out on top five times, the Preakness champ nine times. The last Derby-Belmont winner was Swale in 1985; the last Preakness-Belmont winner was Afleet Alex in 2005. The most recent rematch took place two years ago – long shot Rule on Ice won, with Preakness winner Shackleford and Derby winner Animal Kingdom finishing the race in fifth and sixth positions.
