2013 Daytona 500 Results – Daytona 500 Lives Up To All Of The Hype

The 55th edition of the 2013 Daytona 500 Results made online sports betting history, as for the first time in the 65-year history of NASCAR’s premier series, a woman – Danica Patrick, was on the pole. The fact that it was the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing made it that much more impressive that Danica was on the pole, and while she remained a long shot to win the race, she didn’t disappoint with a top-10 finish. Danica remained in position to challenge for a victory until the final lap, when she fell from third to eighth but held on to place in the top-10 in the first race of her first full Sprint Cup Series season. It wasn’t an underdog who beat out Danica and the rest of the field for the victory either, as five-time Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson won the Great American Race.

Daytona 500 Champ Johnson

Johnson was in contention to win the entire day, doing an excellent job to establish position near the front of the pack and then waiting to make his move at the very end. Johnson avoided three main wrecks that took out contenders including Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, and defending Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski along the way, and was fortunate to have a good enough car when some of the other top 5Dimes contenders in the race simply didn’t. That includes Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch, who both led before being forced to the garage because of engine problems late in the race. That opened the door for Johnson to lead the field over the final 10 laps and he never gave up the lead, with Danica right behind him in third, and another Hendrick Motor Sports’ driver right behind him.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was one of the five drivers that past Danica late in the race, as on the final lap he made his move on the inside to pull in behind Johnson for the one-two finish. Henrick Motor Sports made a statement in the offseason that after missing out on the title two sports betting years in a row, more would be expected of the team. The new Generation-6 cars certainly were up to speed, and Dale Jr. was definitely up for the challenge. NASCAR’s favorite son was right there behind Johnson for the finish, and will open the year five points behind him for first place in the Sprint Cup Series standings.

Johnson and Dale Jr. were among the online sportsbook favorites to win the race, and while Danica and JJ Yeley surprised to an extent with top-10 finishes, a number of cars did not finish. Keselowski rallied after getting repairs in the garage and somehow managed to finish fourth, but Kahne, Stewart, Kenseth, Busch, and Kevin Harvick weren’t so lucky, and now face an uphill climb to get back in to contention. The Daytona 500 was an exciting ride filled with a ton of excitement, and while it will be remembered as Danica’s race, it was also a step forward for Johnson and the Hendrick team to open the year.
