2013 San Diego Padres Odds – starting pitching help the Padres?

When football betting students look for a spring diversion and study the realm of Major League Baseball, they’re going to be noticeably unimpressed – and certainly not stimulated – by what they see in the San Diego Padres. Baseball pundits won’t look kindly on the Padres in the 2013 San Diego Padres Odds National League West this season, and while that’s partly a reflection on the Padres themselves, it’s more a reflection of the extent to which the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers have developed their rosters, particularly with respect to starting pitching.

The Giants have merely won two of the past three World Series championships and are loaded with quality arms and high-level defensive players who save so many runs in the field. The Dodgers have invested over $230 million in their roster this season, making a supremely audacious bid to take over the N.L. West and bring Los Angeles its first National League pennant since the World Series season of 1988, which is now 25 years in the past. How can the Padres fight past the San Francisco-Los Angeles double threat? Even if you don’t care for online casino games, you have to admit that the cards don’t stack up favorably for San Diego.

Sport Odds lines are likely to project few runs in most games the Padres play. The hitters on this team are not imposing enough, especially in Petco Park, a pitcher-friendly environment. Nick Hundley is a serviceable catcher, but Yonder Alonso at first base won’t move the needle… or move in runs. Alexi Amarista and Logan Forsythe won’t put the fear of the almighty into opposing pitchers at second base. Everth Cabrera is young and filled with potential, but he’s not a proven everyday shortstop. Chase Headley, the team’s third baseman, is San Diego’s best bat in the infield, a loud indication of how little juice the Padres can offer at the plate.

The outfield has at least some power – Carlos Quentin, in left field, could become the centerpiece of the whole batting order, and rightfielder Will Venable gets big hits from time to time. Cameron Maybin and Mark Kotsay could also chip in on occasion. Yet, there’s not enough thumping to be found with these hitters, suggesting that San Diego’s offense is going to be thirsty and parched in the hot summers of Southern California.

Is the starting pitching – typically San Diego’s strength – robust enough to overcome the team’s likely power outages at the plate? Probably not. Clayton Richard is a marvelous starting pitcher, but what about the other four men in the Padres’ rotation? Edinson Volquez should be able to contribute at a high level. Jason Marquis is a decent journeyman type, but his best days seem to be behind him. Compare this staff to the Giants and Dodgers, and it just doesn’t measure up. San Diego needs its pitching to dominate if it wants to stay in the N.L. West race in 2013, but that possibility seems remote at this point.

The bullpen has Huston Street as its closer. Given the injuries Street has endured in an up-and-down career, it’s hard to see how the back end of the pen is going to be able to meet expectations for San Diego this season. Third place in the N.L. West would be a great result for this team, but a fifth-place showing seems more probable.
