2013 Santa Anita Derby results – Pitino Celebrates Goldencents Santa Anita Derby Win Ahead Of National Championship

Rick Pitino is a winner, both on and off the basketball court. That is a sentiment that has rung true for college basketball players and fans that bet Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals throughout their national title run this past year, and over many years as his win total as head coach of one of the most prestigious programs in college basketball have added up. However, in addition to a national title the Pitino family also celebrated a very different kind of win this past month. A horse which Pitino co-owns named Goldencents won the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby not long before the Cardinals beat Wichita State to reach the national title game, and is now headed to the 2013 online betting Kentucky Derby.

Horse RacingTrained by Doug O’Neil and co-owned by Pitino, Goldencents won the Santa Anita Derby over even-money favorite Flashback by 1 ¼ lengths. The 1 ¼-mile distance was no problem for Goldencents, which was sent off at 6/1 odds in the eight-horse field after turning in a disappointing fourth-place finish in the San Felipe Stakes back in March. It was a sound bounce back for a horse that some sports betting experts had written off following the disappointing finish, and proof that O’Neil has Goldencents on track to be in contention for a win at this year’s Kentucky Derby. The upset also leaves questions about Flashback heading in to the final weeks before the Kentucky Derby, and how it will be able to bounce back.

139th KENTUCKY DERBY – 2013

While Pitino made headlines for the win in relation to his team’s national championship run, the bigger storyline may be O’Neil and the fact that he has now pulled off consecutive wins at the important West Coast race for three-year old horses. O’Neil also trained the horse named I’ll Have Another that won the Santa Anita Derby a year ago and went on to win both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes before pulling out of the Belmont Stakes and a chance at Triple Crown glory due to injury. O’Neil has already laid the ground work for Goldencent to be held in that regard following an impressive win at the Santa Anita Derby, and it will be interesting to see how the experts label the horse when the official Kentucky Derby betting odds are released.

Flashback settled for second in the race as the favorite according to the sites listed on the US sportsbook reviews, with Super Ninety Nine finishing third, and Tiz a Minister finishing fourth in the race. With the Kentucky Derby just a couple of weeks a way the odds will be out soon to prelude the post position draw, and it will be very interesting to see how Pitino’s Santa Anita Derby winner looks next to some of the big boys as the basketball coach continues to win both on and off the court.
