2013 World Series MVP Odds – Dodgers Sign Guerrero to a Long Term Deal

Given Cano’s rumored salary demands, said to be close to $310 million over 10 years, removing the Dodgers from the equation is likely to diminish a lot of the negotiating leverage that Cano might have had with Los Angeles still in the market for a second baseman. The two pennant-winners take very different approaches at the plate.

Although the chances that Cano remains in the Bronx just took a step forward, let’s take a quick look at a few other teams that may end up pursuing the jewel of the 2013 middle infield free agent market.

  • San Francisco Giants: Marco Scutaro may have two years to go on his three-year deal with the team, but that doesn’t mean he has to play second base. Moving to shortstop, even at the advanced age of 38, is certainly something that could be considered, considering he’d be an offensive upgrade over Brandon Crawford. With Cano at second base, the Giants would avoid finishing in a tie for last in the majors in home runs produced — they had only four in 2013 — at the position.
  • Detroit Tigers: Now that the Tigers’ playoff run is over, Omar Infante is a free agent, leaving the door open at second base in an already overflowing infield. Adding Cano’s salary to that of Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera might not be the team’s first priority — a little extra help in the bullpen and Max Scherzer’s contract might both take higher priorities — but it certainly could help restock the lineup should the team also allow Jhonny Peralta to seek employment elsewhere.
  • Baltimore Orioles: The oft-injured Brian Roberts is a free agent, and after getting $40 million over the past four seasons, without ever being able to play more than 77 games in any single campaign, perhaps the Orioles will jump at the chance to steal Cano away from their divisional rivals.
  • Cincinnati Reds: The Reds did show some early interest in scouting Guerrero, but with Brandon Phillips still under contract, it’s highly unlikely the team will chase after Cano without first trading away Phillips, and doing so might be hard to do, given Phillips’ current deal (signed through 2017) until Cano is off the table. It’s a Catch-22 that makes Cano-to-Cincinnati highly unlikely to happen.
