With important prep races happening week after week, three-year-old thoroughbreds and their trainers have hit the road to the Kentucky Derby Future Wager in an attempt to secure their positions at the starting gate at Churchill Downs come the initial Saturday in May. Only 20 can make the last cut, and even as we transfer to the next leg of the Championship Series, the stakes have now been raised.

2014 Kentucky Derby Future Wager OddsTwo major prep races went down over the weekend, which have once again shuffled up the order of potential Derby contenders. The Spiral Stakes (G3) on Saturday wound up in a three-way battle that came down to the wire between We Miss Artie, Coastline and Harry’s Holiday. Pletcher’s We Miss Artie kicked it into high gear in the last stretch, edging out Harry’s Holiday by a nose for the win. Despite a valiant effort, Mark Casse’s Coastline finished third and Reade Baker’s Asserting Bear rounded out the utmost effective four.

Last Sunday’s Sunland Derby (G3) became quite the event for Bob Baffert, whose two horses wound up dueling it out in the homestretch. His chestnut colt, Chitu, was the pre-race favorite and did not disappoint, galloping to a two length victory over Baffert’s other horse, Midnight Hawk. Todd Pletcher’s Commissioner finished third and Justin Evan’s Rebranded came in fourth.

Most of the top 20 Derby contenders have previously likely earned their spots in the starting gate at Churchill Downs. With only a few prep races left to take the road to the Kentucky Derby, it’ll be interesting to see how the Derby hopefuls fair while they enter the next leg of the Championship Series.
