2014 Kentucky Derby Results & Payouts

The 2014 Kentucky Derby ended as much predicted, with California Chrome being the first ever to cross the finish line. The son of Lucky Pulpit, a 5/2 favorite once the ticket windows closed, navigated the 1 1/4 miles race in 2:03.66, defeating second place finisher Commanding Curve by 1 3/4 lengths. California Chrome’s Derby payouts were the following: $7.00 for each and every ‘Win’wager, $5.60 for each and every ‘Place’wager, and $4.20 for each and every ‘Show’wager. The official results also showed Todd Pletcher’s Danza in third; the colt returned $5.00 on a $2.00 ‘Show’bet. Commanding Curve was considered one of many biggest horse racing odds long shots in this year’s Derby field and his returns reflected as much. A ‘Place’bet on the Master Command colt brought $31.80 and a ‘Show’bet yielded a $15.40 payout.

Results & PayoutsJockey Victor Espinoza, who won the 2002 Kentucky Derby aboard War Emblem, indicated he did as low as necessary with California Chrome this afternoon, letting the colt run its race after having a good jump from Gate 5.

Trainer Art Sherman, who at 77 became the oldest trainer ever to win the Derby, was elated with Chrome’s performance.

“It was a picture-perfect ride,” Sherman said. “He was right where he should have been all the way around. Coming down the stretch I was thinking:’Keep rollin’ big boy. Keep rollin’.’ This has to be the sweetest moment of my life.”
