2014 NBA Playoff Picks – Picks For Games On Wednesday, May 14

There’s not a lot of drama surrounding the second-round NBA Playoff Picks series between the San Antonio Spurs and Portland Trail Blazers. There may be some intrigue in the Brooklyn-Miami series on Wednesday.

The Spurs look to save their energy for the conference finals and close out the Blazers in Game 5 of the Western Conference Semis.

Eastern Conference Semifinals, Game 5:Brooklyn Nets @ Miami Heat – Wednesday, May 14. The Miami Heat ran right into a buzzsaw on Saturday in Game 3 of this series, as the Brooklyn Nets got off the mat and used 15 three-pointers to cool off the two-time defending NBA champions. Brooklyn got Joe Johnson free. He consistently managed to get open against a Miami defense that lost its intensity and didn’t contend with the same dogged tenacity it showed in the first two games of this series in South Florida. Mirza Teletovic also hit a pile of threes in the second half to not only build a lead for the Nets, but in addition spread the floor in order that Brooklyn could attack from other angles from the Heat. Brooklyn showed the types of skills that give the Nets the opportunity in this series.

However, once you understand this game, that will be played in Miami, the Heat need to be viewed as the favorite. The Heat definitely used Games 1 and 2 of this series to establish a different kind of identity compared to the regular season, when Brooklyn won twice on Miami’s home floor. The playoffs are a different thing, and with the Nets being old and slow at multiple positions (Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in particular), it’s hard to see how Miami’s Chris Bosh won’t play well. When Bosh plays well and provides a substantial number of production to complement LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, the Heat are really hard to beat. Miami should get ready for Game 5 on Wednesday, and the Heat should really be fine provided that no one gets suspended for this game (due to a Game 4 incident). Provided that nothing overly bad happens in Game 4 for Miami, take the Heat in Game 5.

Western Conference Semifinals, Game 5:
Portland Trail Blazers @ San Antonio Spurs – Wednesday, May 14

When this series began, it felt such as a seven-game battle royale. Portland had all the shooters the Dallas Mavericks had. The Trail Blazers had the sort of quick and resourceful point guard Dallas had. The Blazers figured to manage to get to the basket and force San Antonio’s defense to scramble to produce plays. Portland seemed to have the ingredients required to score 115 points per game from the Spurs, making the most truly effective seed in the Western Conference sweat a bit more after coping with a nerve-wracking seven-game struggle against Dallas in the first round.

Yet, none of those problems have surfaced for San Antonio. What has happened in this series is that Portland’s Damian Lillard has been taken up to school by Tony Parker, the Spurs’ageless and relentless point guard. That matchup has spilled in to the remaining action on the floor. The Spurs’role players are hitting shots because Parker is putting them in good positions on a regular basis. San Antonio’s Kawhi Leonard is playing a lot better than he did against Dallas, and that kind of energy at both ends of the court has been more than Portland can handle. If Portland does force a Game 5 by winning Game 4, take the Spurs on Wednesday night.
