2015 Kentucky Derby Contender International Star

Concluded 2014 with little fanfare, finishing a non-threatening fourth in Kentucky Jockey Club at 36-1, but improved significantly at age three, reeling off consecutive wins in Lecomte, Risen Star and Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. International Star earned a 107 BRIS Late Pace rating last time and Derby could set up nicely for his rally – such as the finishing kick he’s displayed on the far turn and fearless colt is prepared to bull his way through tight spaces.

International Star Ready for Derby

International Star in the Lecomte Stakes.

Run style may offer appeal for bottom of exotics, but International Star will soon be facing a steep class hike after defeating suspect rivals in New Orleans. His BRIS Speed numbers are below the top contenders and must avoid getting stopped in traffic given his affinity for racing over the inside.

This horse has got the classic Derby running style. Although it appears like this is the greatest crop of 3 year-old colts in decades, when that extra eighth of a mile gets thrown in the mix some of those horses won’t display the same turn of foot in the last eighth. Seen it so many times. Another to consider being an upsetter is Mubtaahij. He HAS gone over one and eighth miles and done so easily. These two are my exacta.

Worked over the Churchill Downs track today in company with older stake winner Ghost is Clear. The pair went in splits of 11 4/5, 24 1/5 & 36 1/5 before they finished the 1/2 mile. IS galloped out 5F in 1:02 1/5. The worked was noted as “excellent “.
