Last season, the San Jose Sharks defied the odds to reach the Stanley Cup for the first time in their history – an incredible achievement considering their tough division. Whilst they fell short against the Pittsburgh Penguins in hockey’s showpiece series, the Sharks learnt a lot en route to the finals and Peter DeBoer’s men will be targeting a Stanley Cup return after carrying their consistent form into the new campaign.

At the time of writing, San Jose have won 20 of their 33 fixtures so far and sit atop the NHL’s Pacific Division. Ahead of the Christmas period, the Sharks have recorded seven victories in their last 10 appearances on the ice and DeBoer will be quietly confident of leading his side to another divisional title in the coming months.

The Edmonton Oilers are two wins behind the Sharks right now but San Jose have the nous to step up and pull away in the second half of the season, especially if they continue their fine run of form through January.

As of December 22nd, the Sharks are well placed to push on and secure a playoff spot in the second half of the campaign. San Jose, currently priced at 16/1 to do just that in the latest bet365 betting markets, will need to improve offensively but Pavelski & Co can take plenty of confidence from last year’s effort as they look to cement their position as one of the best franchises in the Western Conference.

Right now, defenseman Brent Burns is their top goalscorer with 13 efforts and the Sharks offense must step up if they are to challenge this year. They have a solid option at goaltender in Jones but it would be foolish for DeBoer to rely on his defense when San Jose boast such a talented offensive unit. If nothing else, it looks like a very exciting time to be a Sharks fan once again and a Stanley Cup return could be on the cards if they continue to inspire confidence.
