MLB Update: Who Will Win The Fifth starter Roll in Texas?

MLB update The competition for the work of fifth starter with the Texas Rangers took a major flip Sunday once lefthanded prospect Martin Perez suffered a broken forearm once he was stricken by a fly ball.

MLB UpdatePerez could be out for at least two months, says’s T.R. Sullivan.

The 21-year-old Perez was 1-4 with a 5.45 ERA in six starts and six relief appearances for the Rangers last season, but emerged as a viable fifth starter candidate after throwing two scoreless innings in his first outing.

Sullivan says left-hander Robbie Ross and right-hander Randy Wells are the two best candidates for the fifth-starter spot. Justin Grimm may have played himself out of the mix by allowing nine runs over 4 1/3 innings in his first two outings.

With an opening at the back of the rotation, the Rangers could have a greater incentive to sign free agent Kyle Lohse. The Rangers and Lohse’s agent, Scott Boras, have remained in contact, Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telegram wrote over the weekend.

Sunday was a rough day in the fifth starter chase, writes Ron Matejko of ESPNDallas.

“Let Grimm, Ross, Ogando fight it out until Colby gets in and then bring Perez up after rehab assignment in AAA”
