MMA Betting – Tate Looks To Snatch Coenen’s Strikeforce Belt

Soccer betting players who loved watching women compete for the World Cup can keep the action going next weekend in Illinois at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson, as women’s welterweight champion Marloes Coenen will try to use all of her grappling and submission skills to hold off Meisha Tate, who looks to be recovered from a knee injury.

MMAStrikeforce Betting – Saturday, July 30th Coenen (19-4), from the Netherlands, is a submission specialist as 14 of her 19 wins have come via that method, and the 135-pound champion is not to be messed with on the mat. However, she is improving her Muay Thai and kickboxing as she learned that she couldn’t get by on being a submission specialist in her fight against Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos, the current 145-pound champion who thumped Coenen last January. But, like an online poker player who suffered a bad beat, Coenen realized that she had to get back on the horse, so she dropped down to welterweight and took the belt from Sarah Kaufman, the original women’s welterweight champion in Strikeforce, in October. Since then, she defended the belt against Liz Carmouche, who stepped in for an injured Tate in March, and Coenen came away with the win via triangle choke in the fourth round.

Tate (11-2) last fought in August, when she defeated Maiju Kujala and Hitomi Akano in a single-night elimination tournament at 135 pounds, which put her in position to go up against the winner of Kaufman-Coenen. The knee injury set her back earlier this year, but Tate says that she’s ready to go in the biggest fight of her life. Tate comes from a wrestling background, but she is also learning jiu-jitsu and earned a silver medal at the women’s grappling world championships in 2008. At 24, Tate is a relative newcomer to the game as her first MMA fight was in 2007, while Coenen’s was in 2000, but what she lacks in experience, she makes up for in relentlessness, and she will be a threat to Coenen’s title.

BetOnline odds have Coenen as a slight -135 sports betting favorite in this contest, while Tate is rated at +105, and this should be a highly technical match which will feature lots of groundwork. Tate has to be very careful on the mat because Coenen can slip a submission on you before you know what is going on, so Tate may be working on her stand-up to keep the fight on their feet. However, Coenen has stepped up her stand-up game as well since getting throttled by “Cyborg”, and she will be able to hold her own against Tate. In what should be a great contest, take Marloes Coenen in your betting picks.
