NCAAF Picks Week 1 – Alabama Opens Potentially Historic Season With Week One Clash Versus Hokies

It isn’t that the Alabama Crimson Tide has a chance to rewrite the college football record book in 2013. It is that they are expected to. Alabama opens the year in search of a third-straight national title and its third in four years, something that has never been done before. Head coach Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide opens in a familiar environment with a date against the Virginia Tech Hokies at the Georgia Dome on Saturday. Alabama is a 19-point favorite for its 2013 online sports betting debut – a big number that actually might still not be big enough.

NCAAF Picks Week 1

Beyond the stats, outside the lines, and embedded deep within your brains, here are the essential things you need to know to get ready for the opener with Virginia Tech

Alabama Crimson Tide @ Virginia Tech Hokies
Saturday August 31, 2013 – 5:30 PM ET
Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia
NCAAF Sportsbook Line: Alabama – 19

It’s impossible to forget the beating the Crimson Tide laid on Notre Dame in last year’s BCS Championship game, when they easily covered in a game some fans actually thought the Fighting Irish had a legitimate shot to win. This Virginia Tech has not proved it can compete for a national title the way that Notre Dame did last year, and what’s even scarier is that this Alabama team could actually be better than last year’s BCS champion.

College Football Betting Preview: Alabama – The offense is certainly at least on paper the best that Saban has ever had at his disposal, with senior quarterback AJ McCarron the key cog that is expected to make this machine go. The Tide defense was the best in the nation a year ago and could very well be again in 2013 with returning stars like CJ Mosley and Haha Clinton-Dix leading the way, but the offense will get a lot more attention if it lives up to expectations. McCarron will be throwing to one of the best receivers in the nation in Amari Cooper, while sharing the backfield with one of the most talented SEC running backs in TJ Yeldon. That could cause big problems for the Hokies’ defense in week one, as the Alabama offense looks to open things up a little more.

College Football Betting Preview: Virginia Tech – The Virginia Tech defense finished 32nd in scoring a year ago and wasn’t that bad at all, but they didn’t have to play the eventual BCS champions along the way. Head coach Frank Beamer is happy with the talent on that side of the ball again this year, although losing linebacker Ronny Vandyke will hurt. The return of quarterback Logan Thomas for his senior year should provide the Hokies with a boost in the long run. However, he first must survive an incredibly tough sports betting challenge against this Tide defense, something that hurt Denard Robinson when he was beaten up by Alabama in a season-opening loss with Michigan a year ago.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick – The Wolverines were severely outmatched in last year’s season-opening loss to Alabama, and so was Notre Dame in the BCS Championship game. This year’s Tide at least on paper appear to be even better than last year’s championship-winning team, and that is trouble for the rest of the nation as they try and make history with a third-straight BCS title and their fourth in five years. Virginia Tech is the first obstacle in Saban’s way, and it’s highly unlikely he will hold back with a chance to make a statement in week one.-College Football Betting Pick: Alabama Crimson Tide – 19.
