NFL News: Arizona Cardinals want to get Alex Smith for 2013 season

NFL news Trading Smith to the Cardinals would upgrade Arizona’s quarterback situation”. Would it really though? The Niners know how limited he is. I am sure they would rather see a rival stuck with mediocre at best vs the gamble that a rookie actually works out ala Wilson/Kaepernick.

NFL NewsAccording to what a league source revealed to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, the Cards are currently exploring the possibility of such a trade. At this point, we don’t know how serious the Cards are about trading for Smith (or any QB), nor do we know what price the Niners are demanding. A report over the weekend suggested that a Smith deal was effectively done, though there have been reports thereafter disputing that claim.

In the Arizona Cardinals’ quest to field a lot of competitive team in 2013, they’ve set about trying to adjust their stable of QBs. Part of the process is assessing what they have on hand — Kevin Kolb, John Skelton, Ryan Lindley and Brian Hoyer were on the roster by season’s end, though Hoyer is headed back to free agency — and there has been some talk that Kolb will be asked to re-structure his contract (translation: take a pay cut). But they’re also expected to target some outside options via the draft, free agency and/or a trade, and there’s new evidence that the team may get in on the bidding for 49ers backup QB Alex Smith.

Of course, there’s also the bigger question of whether the Niners want to trade Smith within the division. It’d certainly provide the QB with some added motivation on two occasions per season, but that’s only 12.5 percent of San Francisco’s schedule. And to be fair, he’d probably be thankful to them for finding him a new team where he can essentially waltz right into the starting job. In any case, the Cardinals are just one team that’s been rumored to be interested in Smith — the Chiefs, Jaguars and Browns have also been listed as prospective suitors — so he may not wind up in Arizona in the end.

If the Niners are looking for a conditional #1 in 2014 (from teams outside the division) for Smith, the Cardinals would have to offer up their #1 in 2014 without any restrictions attached.
