NFL News Today – New York Jet’s Get Rid Of Tebow After one Season

One year after bringing quarterback Tim Tebow, the New York Jet’s confirmed this morning what many NFL fans, analysts and bettors have been discussing for months now: Tebow is officially out of the team. The move isn’t really a surprise for most football followers, after all, the 25-year old quarterback spent much of last season on the bench and wasn’t part of the Jets’ plans for this offseason.

Tebow arrived at the Jet’s facility on Monday morning and was personally told he had been cut from the team. Minutes later, team officials gave the media a quick statement.

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow. Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.” coach Rex Ryan said.

Traded to the New York Jets on March 2012 after a season in Denver where he led the Broncos to the playoffs and managed to put together one of the most exciting post-season victories in recent NFL history, the Heisman Trophy winner and former Florida Gators star quarterback was widely expected to take a leading role with Jets.

At his arrival, every person involved in the team, including team owner Woody Johnson, former general manager Mike Tannenbaum and former offensive coordinator Tony Sparano said they were all ”on board” with Tebow, but the result was much more disappointing.

Under head coach Rex Ryan and new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, Tebow completed only six passes for 39 yards and 32 rushing attempts for 102 yards and no touchdowns in his lone season with the Jets. The presence of Tebow throughout the season, in which the Jets finished 6-10, created a controversy as the fans and media called for Coach Rex Ryan to use Tebow in the starting lineup instead of Mark Sanchez.

Tebow spoke with Ryan about his wish to take the starting role, but was benched in favor of Greg McElroy, a third-string quarterback who had not been active in an NFL game until then. For many NFL experts, his immense popularity with Denver simply backfired. Many were hoping to see Tebow in action, but according he was never impressive and convincing enough in practice to earn more playing time.

After a disappointing season, Tebow attended the first two weeks of the off-season program, even when his short stay with the Jets was over. In the end, Tebow cost the Jets the fourth-round and a sixth picks in last year draft and close to $4 million in salaries and compensations agreed as part of the trade with Denver.

While his exit from the Jets’ roster has been on the table for several months, the arrival of West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, picked by the Jets in the second-round of the 2013 Draft, made things harder for Tebow. With Smith, the Jets had six quarterbacks on the roster (Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Geno Smith, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms) and someone definitely had to go. But the fact the Jets waited until this Monday to make their move makes Tebow’s future in the NFL highly uncertain.

Given the time, the question now is: Will anyone sign Tebow? At the moment, that seems unlikely. However, analysts believe his chances of finding a deal in the short term are thin mainly because of his forgettable performance with the Jets and his salary, but once he clears waivers, he would be able to arrange a deal with any franchise as a free agent.
