NFL Preseason Picks Week 4 – Lions, Bills, Prepare For Roster Cuts

Anyone who has any awareness of how an NFL preseason works will realize that we’ve arrived at the point where backups are going to be the focal point. The starters are resting for week one.

NFL Preseason PicksKeep An Eye On: Buffalo’s offensive line – A sound sports betting play doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel. It just needs to look at the existing facts and parameters of a given matchup and make the appropriate evaluation in response. Such is the case for this Thursday’s encounter between the Lions and Bills. Buffalo got thrown around like a rag doll against the Washington Redskins in the week-three preseason dress rehearsal for both ballclubs. The Bills just didn’t match up well against the Redskins in the trenches, so in this game, the Bills and their coaching staff, led by first-year head coach Doug Marrone, need to see what they can get from their offensive linemen. Finding quality on the depth chart – getting number-two linemen who might be able to provide help for the first-stringers over the course of the coming season – is a paramount priority for the Bills in this tilt. Knowing that Detroit has assembled one of the better front fours in the league (even though the starters won’t see much of any action in this game) might give Buffalo the belief that in a game dominated (in terms of playing time, not excellence) by second- and third-stringers, it can gain enough clarity to make final roster cuts with a clear sense of who’s best for the team.

Detroit’s foremost issues concern team discipline and attitude. For Buffalo, player evaluations are more prominent and urgent in this game.

Watch The Progress Of: Shaun Hill (Lions), Robert Woods (Bills) – The community of online sports betting specialists should be able to look at this contest in a sober manner and identify second-string players that need to play well. For Detroit, it seems that Kellen Moore has become the second-best quarterback on the roster. For that reason, fellow backup Shaun Hill will want to use this game as his time to shine. Perhaps Hill won’t even stay on the Detroit roster if he’s the third-string quarterback behind Moore (number two) and starter Matthew Stafford. Playing well in this game, though, could make him a more attractive commodity as a number-two quarterback for another NFL ballclub later in the season. Hill and so many other players in his position on the depth chart know that this final preseason game – the playground for second- and third-string guys in the league – is extremely important for the future.

Football betting number-crunchers might look at this game as a chance to brush up on rookies who are trying to make their way up the depth chart on various NFL rosters. For the Bills, Robert Woods – an immensely gifted receiver out of USC – will try to leave one more lasting impression before the regular season begins. Woods was not the best receiver on USC last season – Marqise Lee was – so he knows that he can perform better as a professional. A good outing from Woods will give Marrone the knowledge that his opening-day quarterback, whoever it may be, will have a reliable receiver to throw to when the Bills use a three- or four-wide spread formation.

Outlook:- Both teams do not look particularly good before the start of the season, but in Detroit’s case, the main issue is avoiding dumb penalties. The Bills seem to have worse problems – they’re just not very good and do not figure to improve much even if they don’t make a lot of glaring mistakes. The Lions have upside, and that’s a good reason to take them in this game.

NFL Odds: Lions -4.5
Pick: Lions -4.5
