NFL Update – Steven Jackson maybe heading to The Green Bay Packers

NFL Update Back when it was first reported that RB Steven Jackson’s deal with the St. Louis Rams was set to void at the end of the 2012 league year, the Green Bay Packers were mentioned by some observers as a speculative destination; this speculation avoided the inconvenient truth that the Packers rarely spend big in free agency, especially in recent seasons. But as free agency gets rolling for 2013, there’s a little more meat to the possibility.

NFL UpdateSpecifically, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter has reported that the Packers have “reached out” to Jackson. In response, ESPN business analyst Andrew Brandt tweeted, “Usually, when Packers ‘reach out’ on first day of free agency, it’s to let players know they’ll check back after big $$ is spent.”

Now Jackson could land in Green Bay, but there are other destinations that make more sense (given what we know of the Packers’ spending habits, and other factors). One is the Atlanta Falcons, another is the Denver Broncos. But again, don’t entirely close the door on Jackson-to-Green Bay just yet:

NFL Update – Green Bay continues to be the favorite to land former St. Louis running back Steven Jackson.

“Source who talked to Rams says Jackson likely will be signing with Packers,” PackerReport.com tweeted.

Once Jackson signs with Green Bay, Atlanta and Denver will then move in another direction for running back help. Michael Turner, Ahmad Bradshaw or Shonn Greene could become options for those two franchises.

“At the very least, it would represent a significant departure for general manager Ted Thompson to jump out on the first day of free agency and sign a sought-after veteran. It’s fair to say that Jackson would enhance the Packers’ offense, but the team has historically sought less-visible ways to stock up on running backs. If I had to guess, based on history, the Packers aren’t likely to beat down Jackson’s door to get him to sign. That’s not to say it couldn’t eventually happen. But they’re more likely to let the free agency dust settle first.”
