Purdue vs Cincinnati College Football Picks Week 1 – Rob Henry will be Purdue’s starting quarterback

In what wasn’t much of a surprise, Purdue will turn to senior Rob Henry as its starting quarterback. The Boilermakers open Aug. 31 at Cincinnati opened as 10.5-point WagerWeb underdogs.

Purdue will go with experience as senior quarterback Rob Henry has won the starting job vs. Cincinnati on August 31.

The senior has experience – starting six games at quarterback in 2010 – while redshirt freshman Austin Appleby and freshman Danny Etling have yet to take a snap in a college game. Henry began training camp No. 1, followed closely by Etling. Henry was named the No. 1 quarterback prior to the start of the 2011 season, but suffered a torn ACL before the opener against Middle Tennessee. Last season, Henry saw limited time at quarterback and also played running back and receiver while Robert Marve and Caleb TerBush shared snaps. Henry wound up completing just 21 of 38 passes for 216 yards and three TDs, rushing 38 times for 74 yards and one TD and catching six passes for 65 yards.

Henry has totaled 1,212 passing yards and 11 touchdowns in 22 career games. In 2010, he became the first Purdue quarterback to lead the team in both rushing and passing yardage in a season. He made his first career start Oct. 9, 2010 at Northwestern, rushing for 132 yards on 16 carries as the Boilermakers rallied to beat the Wildcats. Henry is 2-4 as a starter.

This is the first big move for new Purdue coach Darrell Hazell, who turned around a moribund Kent State program before being hired in West Lafayette. Etling — a four-star prospect from Terre Haute, Ind. who enrolled in time for spring practice, appears to to have an edge on Appleby for the backup slot. Hazell has made it clear he won’t rotate quarterbacks during games, but competition remains each week.

“He’s done a good job of working the pocket, finding the safe spot in the pocket and delivering the ball as a passer. Those are things maybe the first half of spring practice he didn’t do as well as he’s doing now,” offensive coordinator John Shoop said of Henry.

Purdue hasn’t played Cincinnati since the 2001 season. College Football Picks Week 1 Bet under the total in the game August 31st.
