UFC 144 Picks – Edgar, Henderson Headline UFC Return To Japan

True UFC fans are aware of the role that Pride played in the growth of mixed martial arts worldwide, as the Japanese promotion was home to some of the most violent fights in the history of the sport and a number of their stars eventually came to the UFC as Pride’s popularity waned. The UFC will return to Japan for the first time in over 12 years with UFC 144 on Saturday night, and the main event is a tilt between lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Benson Henderson in what should be a thrilling fight.

Edgar-Henderson-UFC-144-pre-press-picksEdgar Henderson Odds – Saturday, 10:00 PM ET A BetOnline.com review of Edgar (14-1-1) should read as follows: undersized in body, but the biggest heart in the company as he bounced back from two first-round beatings at the hands of Gray Maynard to earn a draw in their 2010 “Fight of the Year”, and then again in the 2011 rematch. But Edgar has been underrated since he first faced B.J. Penn to take the 155-pound title, and then again in the rematch (those betting March Madness odds may look at Edgar as a double-digit seed). But he is a strong wrestler who surprised everyone with his striking, and his ability to take punishment is incredible.

Henderson (15-2) also has a background in wrestling, and his ability to scramble and get out of submissions may be unrivalled in all of MMA. He also breeds exciting fights as battles with Donald Cerrone and Anthony Pettis have won “Fight of the Year” honors since 2009, and he is always improving his stand-up game, although he is more comfortable on the mat. Players that work with price per head software also know that Henderson is a former WEC champion, so he is used to high-pressure fights. He’ll get all he can handle on Saturday.

Edgar comes into this match as a -125 favorite in this showdown, while Henderson is rated at +105, and the one thing that is for sure about this match is that it will be fought at a frantic pace. Both men have extraordinary gas tanks, so conditioning shouldn’t be a problem and the fight may actually be fast in the fifth round than in the first. Both come from wrestling, and both have brown belts in jiu-jitsu, and the edge in striking probably goes to Edgar, although it won’t be by much. They both have great chins and neither has ever been stopped in a fight, so this will likely go the distance and it’ll be a back-and-forth war, but the slightest of edges has to go with Edgar, who has taken on two tough customers in Penn and Maynard, and he should be your online betting pick.
